What to Do Before a Windstorm

Storms can’t always be predicted, but there are steps you can take to protect both your property and family if you know that high winds are on their way. Use this list as a guide to start making preparations at the first warning of an oncoming storm.

  • Patio furniture, outdoor trash cans, lawn décor and other outdoor objects can become projectiles during a windstorm. Store them in a garage or shed until the storm passes. Similarly, rock or gravel landscaping materials should be replaced with shredded bark so it doesn’t cause damage if lifted and thrown by winds.water droplets on glass window
  • Trim away dead and damaged branches from the trees on your property to prevent them from breaking off and falling on your house.
  • Close all curtains and blinds around your house to prevent shattered glass from blowing deep into your home.
  • Find a safe area in your home where your family can take cover. This may be a basement or bathroom, but should be a windowless room close the center of the house. To that note, create an entire emergency plan so your family knows where to go, what supplies to bring and where to meet up if you get separated.
  • A piece of your emergency plan involves packing some supplies. This should include flashlights with extra batteries, a battery-powered weather radio, cell phones with chargers, water and non-perishable food, first aid supplies, work gloves, cash, important contact numbers, hygiene items and copies of important documents like your insurance policies.

Possibly the most important thing you can do far in advance of any storm warning is to call your independent insurance agent to ensure that you have adequate coverage to protect your property.
